Leon Goretzka has completed a medical with Aston Villa, leaving the free-agent midfielder one procedural step from formally joining Unai Emery’s squad. Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg says the 31-year-old is now considered a Villa player having passed his checks, with a contract of between two and three years expected once terms are finalised.
Villa had made no formal announcement at the time of publication. The club still has to complete the contract and registration paperwork before Goretzka is eligible to feature for the first team.
No Fee Involved
The move carries no transfer fee. Goretzka’s contract at Bayern Munich expired earlier this summer, allowing him to negotiate with Villa as a free agent.
A Tight Registration Window
The timing matters because Villa face Arsenal on bank holiday Monday. According to the report, Villa may need to lodge Goretzka’s registration by midday on Friday to have him available for that fixture — a deadline shaped by the way the Premier League calendar falls around the holiday.
Clearing the medical removes one obstacle to making that cutoff, though the contract and registration steps still need to be finished first.
Why Emery Needs Him Now
The urgency stems from Villa’s midfield options thinning out fast. João Gomes was sent off in the 4-0 defeat to Brighton, and Amadou Onana is also unavailable. That leaves Boubacar Kamara as Villa’s only senior alternative in that area of the pitch, underlining why Emery is keen to get a new midfielder registered as quickly as possible.
The Player Villa Are Getting
Goretzka arrives with a substantial résumé. Bayern Munich have confirmed he made 312 appearances across eight seasons in Munich, during which he won the Champions League and seven Bundesliga titles.
That pedigree doesn’t guarantee an immediate role, though. Emery will need to assess Goretzka’s sharpness given he has gone through the summer without a club-run pre-season, so a starting berth against Arsenal is far from assured even if the paperwork is sorted in time.
What Comes Next
If Villa do get an announcement and registration completed before Friday, Goretzka becomes a realistic option not just for the Arsenal game but potentially for the club’s first home fixture of the campaign as well. Until then, the move remains one administrative stage short of official confirmation.
