Tottenham Reject Sunderland’s Season-Long Loan Offer

Tottenham Hotspur have turned down a season-long loan approach from Sunderland for centre-back Kevin Danso, with the club showing no willingness to let the Austria international leave despite his limited game time this season.

Danso’s Rare Appearance

The 27-year-old made his first outing of the campaign in midweek, coming off the bench in the second half of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup victory over Charlton. It was a brief but notable involvement for a player who has otherwise been on the periphery of Thomas Frank’s plans so far this season.

Why the Loan Was Rejected

The source of Danso’s reduced opportunities is clear enough. Spurs have added Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke to their central defensive options this summer, while Micky van de Ven has signed a new contract and been handed the captaincy. That combination has pushed Danso further down the pecking order, yet it appears Tottenham still value him enough as squad cover to knock back Sunderland’s season-long proposal rather than sanction a temporary exit.

A Spurs Regular, For Now

Danso has made 37 appearances for Tottenham since arriving from Lens. He initially joined on loan in January 2025 before the move was made permanent later that year, with Spurs paying £20.9m to complete the deal. That investment may help explain the club’s reluctance to send him out on loan for a full season, even with his first-team chances now looking scarce.

What Happens Next

With this offer rejected, it remains to be seen whether Sunderland maintain their interest in Danso. The defender’s situation at Tottenham looks unlikely to change dramatically in the short term, but how much football he sees between now and January could determine whether another approach follows before the winter window closes.
