Coventry City sign Yirenkyi in club-record deal

Coventry City have completed a club-record signing, bringing in Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi from Danish side Nordsjaelland. The 20-year-old has put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Premier League newcomers.

The Sky Blues are believed to have paid Nordsjaelland a fee of 27m euros (£23.1m), plus a further 3m euros (£2.5m) in add-ons. Yirenkyi becomes Coventry’s fifth summer signing after Frank Lampard led the club back into the top flight following a 25-year absence.

International pedigree and versatility

Yirenkyi made his international debut for Ghana in May 2025 and featured at this summer’s World Cup. He scored a stoppage-time winner in the Black Stars’ group win over Panama and has two goals from 15 appearances for his country.

He is a product of the Right to Dream academy and joined Nordsjaelland in 2024, winning the Danish Superliga’s young player of the year award last season. Although primarily a midfielder, Yirenkyi is known for his versatility, having played at right-back for both club and country.

Speaking after his move, Yirenkyi said he liked what he heard when discussing Coventry’s plans and style with the head coach. “I’m still young so I want to learn from the head coach, the other players and work really hard for the team,” he said.

Highly rated in Denmark

Danish journalist Nicklas Degn, who hosts the Mediano podcast, described Yirenkyi as an extremely exciting player who has been touted as the next big thing. He told BBC Sport that Yirenkyi had been one of the best players in the Danish Superliga in the past season and was extremely highly regarded.

Degn said everyone knew it would just be a matter of time before Yirenkyi moved to a bigger league, especially after his World Cup exploits. He added that Nordsjaelland’s academy has an extremely high reputation internationally for developing young talent.

According to Degn, Yirenkyi is a complete number eight whose versatility is underscored by the fact he has been playing in defence for much of the spring for both Nordsjaelland and the Ghana national team. He said Coventry would be getting hold of an extremely exciting player who plays with a maturity well above his age group.
