Inter Milan have confirmed the signing of Curtis Jones from Liverpool, with the Italian club moving quickly to close out a deal reported to be worth £30m (€35m). The transfer is done — Inter’s own confirmation removes any doubt over whether personal terms or a medical still needed to be sorted.
According to Sky Sports News, the structure of the fee sees Liverpool receive a fixed £25.7m plus a further £4.28m in add-ons, with a 10 per cent sell-on clause also written into the agreement.
End of a 16-year association
Jones joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of nine and leaves having made 228 appearances for the first team, scoring 22 goals since his debut in the 2018/19 season. He had entered the final year of his contract at Anfield, a factor that shaped Liverpool’s willingness to do business this summer.
Across his time at the club he won two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup, and was on the losing side in the 2022 Champions League final.
He is the third England international to move to Inter this window, following John Stones and Djed Spence into Cristian Chivu’s squad.
Iraola’s reaction
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola said he had wanted to keep Jones at Anfield, but pointed to 19-year-old Trey Nyoni as a player capable of stepping into a bigger role this season following the departure.
Sky Sports’ Rich Morgan notes that Jones made 49 appearances under previous boss Arne Slot, 34 of them during last season’s troubled Premier League title defence, sharing midfield duties with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch — and occasionally filling in at right-back.
Under Iraola, the picture looks different again. Morgan reports that the new head coach plans to use Florian Wirtz as his No 10 in a 4-2-3-1, which would leave Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch competing for two midfield berths in front of the back four, with Wataru Endo and Nyoni also in the frame. Whether Liverpool reinvest the Jones fee in a direct replacement remains to be seen, though Morgan does not rule it out.
Jones’ farewell message
Jones posted a lengthy statement confirming his departure, reflecting on a relationship with the club that began in childhood.
“I came here as a kid with a dream of playing for Liverpool, and I’ve been lucky enough to actually live that dream,” he wrote.
He went on to thank the club’s academy staff, coaches and backroom staff, as well as teammates and supporters, adding: “Thank you to the fans that stuck by me and always supported me. I will always be one of you.” He closed the statement by signing off, “Now it’s time for a new challenge and a new chapter for me and my family, and I’m excited for what’s ahead… YNWA.”
Liverpool’s wider business
The Jones sale comes as Liverpool continue to push for reinforcements in wide areas. They have had two offers rejected by Brighton for winger Yankuba Minteh, the most recent worth £60m, and are also pursuing Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, who is valued by the French champions at £145m.
Cody Gakpo, meanwhile, has attracted interest from Spurs, but Liverpool are not currently willing to sell him.
With the Jones deal now finalised on Inter’s side, attention turns to how — or whether — Liverpool reshape their midfield before the window closes.
