PSG Forced to Relocate Opener to Rennes After Heatwave

Paris Saint-Germain’s opening Ligue 1 fixture of its title defence against Rennes has been moved away from the Parc des Princes after a summer heatwave left the pitch unfit for play. French football’s competitions committee confirmed the switch late on Wednesday, with Sunday’s match now going ahead in Rennes instead.

What Happened to the Pitch

PSG said the surface at its home ground had deteriorated to the point where playing there would not be “satisfactory,” citing concerns for “the safety and physical well-being of the players.” The club attributed the damage to this summer’s heatwave in France.

How the Move Came Together

The decision to shift the match to Rennes was made “in agreement” with the home side, according to PSG, who publicly thanked their opponents for “making the match possible.” The announcement came late on Wednesday, just days ahead of Sunday’s kickoff, leaving little time for supporters and travelling fans to adjust.

PSG acknowledged the disruption directly, saying the club “fully understands the inconvenience caused by this change for its supporters and all those who had planned to attend this match at the Parc des Princes.” The statement added that the club “regrets this exceptional situation.”

Fixing the Pitch Before the Next Home Game

PSG says it has already lined up a fix. The club stated it had “identified a solution for replacing the pitch at the Parc des Princes for the upcoming matches,” with the aim of having the ground ready in time for its next home league fixture — against Monaco on September 4.

A Season Already Underway

The relocation comes just days after PSG began its season with silverware. The reigning French league and Champions League champions beat Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria, last Wednesday to retain the UEFA Super Cup, meaning the pitch issue at home arrives at an otherwise strong start to the campaign. The Ligue 1 opener against Rennes will now serve as PSG’s first domestic test of the title defence, just not on home turf.
