Southampton Re-Sign Former Captain Ward-Prowse from West Ham

Southampton have completed the re-signing of James Ward-Prowse, bringing the former captain back to St Mary’s from Championship rivals West Ham United.

The 31-year-old former England midfielder has put pen to paper on a two-year contract, in a deal understood to be worth just under £1m.

A Return Home

Ward-Prowse’s move ends a two-year spell away from the club where he began as an eight-year-old academy prospect. He left Saints for West Ham in 2023, going on to make 75 appearances for the Hammers. His time in east London also included loan spells at Nottingham Forest and, most recently, Burnley, where he featured 14 times last season.

Before his departure, Ward-Prowse had built a long and productive association with Southampton, racking up 410 first-team appearances, 55 goals and 52 assists. Seventeen of those goals came from Premier League free-kicks — just one short of David Beckham’s top-flight record of 18.

“Home Is a Special Place”

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Ward-Prowse reflected on the whirlwind nature of his return.

“It feels a bit surreal,” Ward-Prowse said. “The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I’m delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special.”

He went on to describe the pull the club still holds for him, more than two decades after joining its youth ranks.

“It’s the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight,” he said. “It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be.”

He added that he was looking ahead with anticipation rather than nostalgia. “I’m here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead,” Ward-Prowse said.

International Pedigree

Ward-Prowse has represented England at senior level on 11 occasions, scoring twice for his country — a record that underlines the profile of the midfielder Southampton have brought back into the fold.

With the transfer now finalised, attention turns to how quickly he can settle back into a Southampton side aiming to build on familiar foundations, with a player who knows the club, and what it expects, better than almost anyone in the squad.
