Arsenal Sign Bruno Guimaraes for £75m From Newcastle

Mikel Arteta has declared that Bruno Guimaraes can help Arsenal reach the ‘next level’ after the midfielder’s £75m move from Newcastle United was officially confirmed. The 28-year-old was introduced to fans at Emirates Stadium before Arsenal’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund, though he was not included in the matchday squad.

Arteta explains the appeal of Guimaraes

Arteta said he was delighted to have signed the Brazilian, praising the energy he brought to the training ground immediately. ‘We see very clearly the energy that he brought immediately to the training ground, the hunger, the desire to come here and create a big history at the club,’ he said. The Arsenal manager added that the club needs players with such personality, desire and character as they aim to push higher.

Arteta also detailed what he expects Guimaraes to bring on the pitch, highlighting his versatility to play in two different positions depending on tactical needs. He described the midfielder’s timing and intuition in winning the ball back and progressing play quickly. Arteta further noted Guimaraes’ ability to play passes through defences, move between the lines and get into goalscoring positions.

The signing gives Arteta considerable options in midfield, with Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino all available in the middle of the pitch. Guimaraes is likely to be involved in Arsenal’s game against Como on Wednesday.

More transfer activity possible

Arsenal have already completed the signing of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and brought in goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer. The Gunners had pursued Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr, but the forward instead signed a new six-year deal to remain in Spain.

Despite missing out on Vinicius Jr, Arteta made clear that Arsenal intend to remain ambitious in the transfer market. ‘Well, that’s what we’re trying to do. If we have the right player in the market to make us much better,’ he said, adding that the club are looking forward to further additions.

Arteta also provided an injury update, saying Jurrien Timber remains ‘weeks away’ from returning to fitness. William Saliba is another long-term absentee as he continues his recovery from a back injury.
