Wan-Bissaka Joins Aston Villa on Loan From West Ham

Aston Villa have signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham on a season-long loan, with the move built around what the club have described as a “conditional obligation to buy”.

What the deal actually says

The precise terms of that obligation haven’t been made public. What is known is that West Ham had previously told interested clubs they wanted £25m for the DR Congo right-back, so any permanent fee is likely to be shaped around that figure.

Villa have gone down this road before. Last season they took Harvey Elliott on loan from Liverpool with an obligation to buy for £35m, but the fine print mattered: the move only became permanent if Elliott made 10 league appearances. He managed four, and went back to Liverpool at the end of the season. Whatever conditions are attached to Wan-Bissaka’s deal, that precedent suggests Villa are comfortable structuring loans so the permanent transfer only triggers if a player actually delivers game time.

A deal that took its time

Wan-Bissaka missed West Ham’s opening two Championship matches of the season while the move was being negotiated, underlining how involved the discussions were before his return to the Premier League was confirmed.

The player Villa are getting

Wan-Bissaka is 28 and joined West Ham on a seven-year contract from Manchester United back in 2024. He’s made 65 appearances across two seasons at the London Stadium, including 25 last term as the Hammers went down to the Championship.

Before that, he was a fixture at Old Trafford, making 190 appearances for United and picking up a League Cup winner’s medal in 2023 and an FA Cup in 2024.

He arrives at Villa Park off the back of a strong summer on the international stage, having started all four of DR Congo’s matches at the 2026 World Cup as they progressed to the round of 32.

Where he fits at Villa

Unai Emery’s side finished fourth in the Premier League last season and won the Europa League, which means Champions League football is back at Villa Park this season — and Wan-Bissaka is eligible to play a part in that campaign as well as the domestic one.

He could go straight into contention for Villa’s opening league fixture, away at Brighton on Sunday at 14:00 BST, giving Emery another right-back option as the club juggles four competitions this season.
